Evacuations During Fire Season

TO ALL CORRALES RESIDENTS! Please come attend a meeting about evacuations during fire season. It will be at the Sandia Christian School 24 Academy drive in the gym/cafeteria. Please come listen. Free for all and full good info. Below is the news article in the Corrales Comment.

Residents of Corrales, the Horse Capital of New Mexico, can attend a free presentation on large and small animal evacuations at the Seventh Day Adventist School gymnasium, 24 Academy Drive, July 19th, at 6:30 pm. The event, organized by the Corrales Equestrian Advisory Commission and Corrales Horse and Mule People (CHAMP), will feature village first responders who will brief animal owners on the Corrales Animal Evacuation Plan and go over details should fire strike the Rio Grande Bosque, putting village animals, from chickens to equestrians, in danger. There is no charge for this event.

“Fire season is here, and the dry weather, hot temperatures and wind make for a dangerous combination. We have already had a close call, so it is imperative that animal owners are prepared for the worst possibility,” said Janet Blair, co-chair of the CEAC. She said the presentation will include directions on how to prepare and what include in an emergency evacuation kit.

“We will go over how each person needs to build their own plan. The Village will call for an evacuation and set up holding sites, dependent on location. It is each person’s own responsibility to be able to evacuate their animals,” said Commander Tanya Lattin of the Corrales Fire department.

“Our evacuation plan is a good one, and we should be able to protect village residents and animals as long as everyone is familiar with it,” Blair added.

Challenges During 2020

The challenges during 2020 forced us to cancel  the membership meetings and the recreational ride.  Still, look at all we were able to accomplish:

  •  We held the annual membership meeting in February, with a pizza and potluck dinner and election of board members, followed by a candidate forum of local office seekers.
  •  After the horrific slaughter of a horse in Corrales, we organized the GoFundMe account Justice for Rocky, collecting over $25,000, including a $1000 donation from CHAMP (your dues at work),  which was given to Albuquerque Crime Stoppers to offer a reward.
  •  You sent in over 15 entries to the photo contest this summer. The winners received gift cards to local businesses.
  •  After several incidents, we worked with Corrales Fire Department Chief Martinez to get a horse-friendly new crossing at Romero Road for access to the Bosque.
  •  The CHAMP Facebook page continues to be the go-to point for anyone wanting current, local information about events, horses to buy/sell, boarding, products, recommendations for a vet, farrier, or trainer,  tack to buy or sell, a place to stay for a vacation or longer-term, clinics and other events, literally anything connected to the equine world in Corrales.
  •  Our tireless president, Patti Flanagan, responded to numerous inquiries, questions, and requests for assistance regarding resources for equine owners, activities, rules and regulations, neighbor disputes, etc.

CHAMP passes 500 Mark !!!

Congrats to all of us! Sometime during the past week, CHAMP passed the 500 mark for followers on Facebook! Take a moment and scroll through the posts to realize how awesome CHAMP is for so many varied resources. “It takes a village”, and CHAMP is delighted to be an active part of the village for the equine community in Corrales and surrounding area.
